About
I am a Professor of Language Sciences at Aix-Marseille University (Laboratoire Parole et Langage) and an honorary member of Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). My background combines Computer Science (PhD) and Linguistics. My main research focus is language in conversation: I see “conversation” and “spontaneous speech” as crucial genres for understanding human language and nature. I take the success of large language models as a major new fact that linguists need to address. However, I keep in mind that thousands of languages remain largely excluded from these approaches. I am interested in new models and architectures, but I consider that we need a better balance between efforts devoted to data collection (conversational data, low-resource languages) and analysis, and those devoted to model training and development.
